Not many roofs intentionally are designed to completely encase an old wood shake and turn it into the best Thermally Designed Roof System. Old shake roofs turn into a great insulation!
Gerard roofs are designed to do just that.
The magic of this system has been tested for the time we have been installing it.
Pitfalls of Wood Shake
A wood shake roof demands proper maintenance and repair, or it will not last as long as other products. Mold, rot, and insects can be a problem. The life-cycle cost of a shake roof may be high, and old shakes can't be recycled. The best shakes come from the heartwood of large old cedar trees. Unfortunately all the old growth cedar in the US is gone.
For example, a popular recipe for roof failure calls for low humidity and rainfall, dry winds, and intense sunshine. This combination of climatic elements creates the hostile conditions that make wood shakes highly susceptible to failure. Many of these same roofs are in hail prone regions, or in or around the forested or scrub areas that have historically been the source of many disastrous wildfires. Effectively, you have fragile kindling on top of your house.
Extractives are leached from the cedar shakes, and another phase of destruction begins. Water can more easily enter the wood cells, causing shrinking and swelling. Fungi which like to inhabit wood can also more easily grab a foothold. These fungi start a destructive process which, when left unchecked, will cause premature roof failure in short order.
Certified Stone Coated Steel roof over wood shake.
Any loose shakes are removed and the curled shakes are trimmed back by saws.
A layer of Versa shield is installed over the wood shake. This is a product the cuts off the air should fire occur in the house.
Then the batten counter batten system is installed over the versa shield.
The wood is trimmed back to allow the new Stone coated Steel Roof to cover it.
Stone coated Steel Panels are attached to the batten counter batten system. All of the wood is now encased under the new steel roof.
